Vacancies – Shared Legal Service
We are currently looking to welcome new and enthusiastic individuals to join a Shared Legal Service Team and have four current vacancies – Senior Solicitor (contentious), Assistant Solicitor (Property), Assistant Solicitor (Litigation and Contracts) and Legal Executive (Property). Details about the roles can be obtained from the website links below.
Ashfield District Council is an ambitious and enterprising council committed to maintaining and improving services in challenging financial times.
The legal team is a shared service between Ashfield District Council and Mansfield District Council.
The vacancies present a great opportunity to get involved in partnership working across departmental and organisational boundaries. This is something that not many may have had the chance to experience previously.
We are a team of 16 knowledgeable professionals from diverse backgrounds. Some of us have come from private practice and others have only ever worked in local government. Teamwork and knowledge sharing is the key to our success.
The best part of the job is diversity. Variety is the norm here! From buying multi-million pound properties, prosecuting deaths in care homes, setting up local authority companies to bringing judicial reviews… we do it all!
Working across two authorities requires flexibility, agility and an ability to seamlessly move between different processes, rules and constitutions. Oh… and you’ll also need to be able to build excellent relationships with the leadership teams, client officers and Members across both organisations.
We support both Councils to meet their purpose and visions by providing a good quality, value for money service, which enables them to deliver sustainable improvements to people’s lives and create a safe and caring district where everyone can succeed. We have a strong public service ethos which we balance with a need to develop commercial awareness. More recently, the focus has been on exploring how commercial ventures can support both Councils in managing their budgets. The Legal Service is supporting and advising on these projects whilst developing considerable commercial awareness and business acumen.

“I have worked for the shared service since its inception in 2012. I thoroughly enjoy the work I am involved in and can corroborate that no two days are the same. The people across both organisations are great to work with and I’ve been involved in some really unusual cases whilst also managing a team of highly qualified professionals.” Service Manager – Legal Services
“I really enjoy the work I do and working within a team environment. The Council have been flexible in my request to work reduced hours and are supportive in achieving a good work life balance.” Information officer
“Working at Ashfield District Council gives you a good work life balance and the opportunity to get involved in a variety of legal matters which you wouldn’t ordinarily come across.” Assistant Solicitor
“I was offered a four-week work placement with the legal team of ADC and MDC. As a French law student, I came here not knowing what to expect and had a great time. I didn’t know much about English law and the role of a legal team in a public authority. From the beginning I was never alone and always had someone to make sure I was learning something. Everyone on the team has taken time to explain what kind of work they did, took me to court or meetings with them. They made sure I felt integrated and a part of the team as I got to work on some cases, and do some research for them to then answer council members’ queries. I would never had imagined getting the opportunity to work on such diverse cases and legal questions. I found that the atmosphere within the team and during the day was very nice and I thoroughly enjoyed my time here”. Work placement student
