Ashfield District Council investigating serial bin vandalism

Ashfield District Council is investigating a spree of vandalism to public litter bins in Selston.

Several bins in the area have been attacked and pulled away from their bases, causing costly damage.

It is believed that the bins were vandalised on Saturday morning between midnight and 2:30am. This included two on the Hills, one on Woodnook Recreation Ground, one on Nottingham Road, two on Lea Lane, and one on Stoney Lane.

The Council’s Environment team have been able to repair most of the damage to all but one of the bins which is unfortunately beyond repair.

It seems the same vandals then went on to attack a local bus stop in what local councillor and Portfolio Holder for Streets, Parks and Town Centres Cllr David Martin has described as wanton vandalism.

He said: “This is nothing but mindless vandalism by hooligans who think they are going to get away with it. I can assure them that we are taking this matter very seriously and are not afraid to come down on them like a tonne of bricks.  

The Council will now work with Nottinghamshire Police and local residents to piece together any CCTV footage of the vandalism.

“Public furniture such as bins and bus stops costs the council taxpayer’s money and the cost any replacements is money we now cannot invest into parks and open spaces across the district.
