Ashfield District Council are proud to be supporting an Age Friendly project which aims to make our area a better place to live and grow older in.
The Take a Seat initiative, is a free to join scheme for local businesses to encourage older customers, to come in with a warm welcome and have a rest. The scheme hopes to bring a sense of community back into our town centres, as well as providing older people, people with disabilities or chronic illnesses, a place to sit and catch their breath. Any business that signs up will display an Age Friendly window sticker so they are easily identifiable.
Cllr Helen-Ann Smith, Deputy Leader of Ashfield District Council, says “We are over the moon to see local businesses getting behind this initiative. It is important to make sure that older people, as well as those with disabilities and chronic illness, who want to come into their local town centres feel confident to do so. To hear that people are put off visiting their high street because they get tired and have nowhere to sit is upsetting. To offer something as simple as providing them with a place to rest wherever they may need it, is a step in the right direction.”
In supporting this scheme Ashfield District Council have been busy passing the message around the town centres, encouraging businesses to sign up. Many have already agreed and are displaying their window stickers, including Costa Coffee in Sutton in Ashfield, which hopes to inspire other establishments to follow their lead in welcoming the positive project.
