View or comment on a planning application

You can view all planning applications online. You can comment on applications where a decision is yet to be taken.

Use our online planning application system to:

  • search for current and historic planning applications (since 1974)
  • make comments on a pending planning application. 

Comment on a planning application

Users can search for applications by:

  • date of application
  • planning reference number
  • postal address
  • council ward

How to make a comment on a planning application

If you would like to make representations or objections about a planning application please quote the reference number when providing comments.

All comments on planning applications must be made in writing by:

  • using our online application system
  • email: planning.admin@ashfield.gov.uk
  • post: Planning, Ashfield District Council, Urban Road, Kirkby in Ashfield, NG17 8DA

In order for your comments to be taken into consideration, any comments or objections should be lodged within a specific timeframe. A minimum of 21 days is always available for public comment. 

The expiry date for public comments varies for each application and can be checked via the online application system by entering the application reference number. 

All public comments received will be published in full unless clearly requested it is not at the start of your message. We will publish your name and address but not signatures, telephone numbers or email addresses. 

Planning application files are a public document and in accordance with our Code of Conduct any letters submitted in respect of a proposal will become available for inspection by any interested persons, including members of the public and the applicant.

Please ensure your comments do not contain any personal details or defamatory remarks.

What is a planning consideration?

When you make a comment it is useful to know what we will and won't take into account when making our decision. The lists here are not exhaustive but give an idea of what we do and don't take into account when looking at comments about a planning application. 

Considerations we take into account include:

  • relevant policies
  • overshadowing or loss of light
  • overlooking or loss of privacy
  • the scale and size of the development
  • the design, appearance, materials, and layout
  • dominance
  • highway and pedestrian safety issues
  • traffic generation
  • site history
  • noise, disturbance or smells
  • local character
  • conservation (historic buildings)
  • loss of important open spaces
  • drainage issues
  • wildlife (particularly protected species such as bats or newts)
  • landscaping and trees
  • loss of important physical features
  • and potential conditions. 

We do not normally take into account: 

  • impact on property values
  • private property issues such as boundary dispute, access rights, damage caused to your property by a third property
  • matters covered by other legislation such as Licensing or Building Regulations
  • the perceived morals or future intentions of developers
  • loss of a view
  • competition (such as a new competitor business starting up).
