Exhumation

Exhumations are the removal from the ground of human remains, whether as a body or as cremated remains.

This includes the moving of a body from the original grave to a new grave, sending a body for cremation or to allow police or coroner intervention.

Any exhumation requires a licence from the Ministry of Justice - you can apply online through the Government website.

You do not need to pay when you apply but there may be fees for the exhumation or any reburial if the application is approved.

Apply for an exhumation - GOV.UK
