Keeping pets at your council home

If you live in a council house or bungalow you can keep the following animals without our written permission:

  • 1 domestic dog
  • 1 domestic cat
  • 1 domestic caged bird
  • fish
  • 2 small caged pets for example, gerbil, hamster or rabbit.

If you live in a house or bungalow and want more than one pet you must get our written permission first. You will also need our permission if you want a pet not included on this list.

If you live in a flat or in sheltered accommodation you or anyone living with you may not keep a pet without our written permission first. We will not unreasonably withhold permission but factors that will be considered will include the type of property you live in and the type of pet you wish to keep.

You are responsible for the control of any pets which belong to you or anyone living with you. Permission to keep pets may be withdrawn at our discretion if we consider that the pet is causing a nuisance, and/or damaging the property.
