Adrian Sheldon View is officially on the map
A new housing development dedicated to an Ashfield soldier has now been officially put on the map.
Richard Bailey-Wiles, a Field Surveyor for Ordnance Survey, has now surveyed the 16 new houses on Adrian Sheldon View, Kirkby, so the site can be included on the map.
The new development has been named in memory of Rifleman Adrian Sheldon, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.
His mum Diane Sheldon joined Mr Bailey-Wiles on the site and pushed the button to put the estate on the Ordnance Survey map.
Mrs Sheldon said:
“It’s amazing that Adrian Sheldon View is now officially on the Ordnance Survey map and there for everyone to see. The idea to name a street after Adrian was first talked about three years ago and now it is here.
“This is just the icing on the cake.”
Mr Bailey-Wiles collected the data needed for the map the previous week using a GPS sensor and satellites to mark the houses. It was then Mrs Sheldon who named the street on the map and pressed the button to make it go live.
Kirkby resident Mr Bailey-Wiles said:
“I take great pride in maintaining the map for my part of the country and even more so when it’s my local town.
“I live in Kirkby and have followed the work from when I first found out about it in the Ashfield Matters magazine. I had to wait for the houses to be occupied before I could carry out the survey.”
Cllr Tom Hollis, Ashfield District Council’s Executive Lead for Strategic Housing and Climate Change, said:
“This is a special street for us as a Council and we are proud to see it take its place on the Ordnance Survey map. It has been fascinating to hear the process and find out more about the history of Ordnance Survey.
“I would like to thank Richard for coming down to meet us and for all the work he has done to officially put Adrian Sheldon View on the map.”
The new homes are part of Ashfield District Council’s pledge in 2023 to build more than 200 new homes within four years. This was on top of the 100 built since 2018.
This includes 40 new properties in Hardwick Lane, Sutton, which are nearing completion and plans have been approved for 20 new houses in Fairhaven, Kirkby.
Ordnance Survey is responsible for mapping the urban and rural landscapes of Great Britain, acting as the National Mapping Service.
