Ashfield District Council supports No Mow May for third year
Ashfield District Council is proud to be taking part in No Mow May in 2026, marking the third year the Council has supported the nationwide biodiversity initiative.
Launched by UK conservation charity Plantlife, No Mow May began in response to the 97% loss of grassland meadows since the 1930s and is now entering its eighth year. The campaign encourages communities to pause mowing throughout May, allowing wildflowers to bloom and supporting the recovery of threatened ecosystems.
Allowing grass and wildflowers to grow naturally provides:
- Vital early-season food sources for bees and other pollinators
- Improved habitats for insects, small mammals, and other wildlife
- A boost to local biodiversity and wildlife
While not all parks are included, Ashfield District Council has designated several green spaces for reduced mowing this May, including:
- Healdswood Recreation Ground
- Leamington traffic island
- Sutton Lawn
- Orchid Recreation Ground
- Acacia Recreation Ground
- Morvern Park
- Summerfield Recreation Ground
- Washdyke Recreation Ground
- Plumb Park
- Multiple roadside verges across the district
Areas that need to be kept short for safety reasons will still be mowed throughout May to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents.
Councillor Helen‑Ann Smith, Deputy Leader of Ashfield District Council and Portfolio Holder for Parks and Environmental services, said: “By pausing mowing and allowing our green spaces to flourish, we’re helping to create habitats that support bees, butterflies, and a whole range of wildlife that our environment depends on.
I’m incredibly proud that we’re taking part for a third year. It reflects our ongoing commitment to protecting local nature, enhancing our parks and open spaces, and ensuring future generations can enjoy a cleaner, greener Ashfield.”
