Ashfield resident receives special award for supporting Armed Forces community
An Ashfield resident has received special recognition for her outstanding dedication to supporting veterans and the Armed Forces community.
Edwina Morris, 87, was nominated by Ashfield District Council for the Inspiration Award at the Boots and Berets Awards held on 10 September in Nottingham.
However, judges felt her contribution was so exceptional that they presented her with a special award in recognition of her long-standing work with the Royal British Legion and Merchant Navy Association Mansfield and Ashfield Branch, and for her tireless support of Nottinghamshire's Armed Forces community.
Edwina is Chairman of the Royal British Legion Kirkby in Ashfield Branch and Secretary of the Merchant Navy Association Mansfield and Ashfield Branch. A former Senior Social Worker specialising in mental health, she has spent many years supporting veterans and their families through welfare visits, practical advice and emotional support.
She also plays a key role in local remembrance activities, the Poppy Appeal and Armed Forces events across Ashfield, helping to bring together veterans, families and support organisations.
Theresa Hodgkinson, Chief Executive of Ashfield District Council, said: "Edwina is a truly remarkable individual whose dedication to supporting veterans and the Armed Forces community is nothing short of inspirational.
"She gives her time, energy and compassion so selflessly, often working behind the scenes to ensure others receive the support, recognition and respect they deserve.
"Her kindness has touched the lives of so many people across Ashfield and beyond.
"We were delighted to nominate Edwina and are incredibly proud to see her receive this special recognition. It is thoroughly deserved and reflects the enormous difference she has made to our community over many years."
Edwina added: “Being nominated for the Inspiration Award and being a finalist was a complete surprise, and I was delighted to have been given the opportunity to attend the Boots and Beret awards evening.
“When it was announced at the end of the award presentations that I was to receive a special award, I couldn't believe it and was overcome to see my name on the screen, I can’t describe how I felt but I was shocked, excited, pleased, grateful and emotional.
“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in giving me the opportunity to receive this very special award and it will take pride of place in my home.”
The award recognises Edwina's lifelong commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community and the lasting impact she continues to have on the lives of veterans and their families across Ashfield and Nottinghamshire.
