Central Walk revamp finishing soon

Ashfield District Council’s work to improve and modernise Central Walk, Hucknall, will be finished in September.

The finishing touches that will totally transform the space will resume on 1 September, after work was paused in July whilst the bespoke planters were being built.

Expected to take up to two weeks to complete, the planters, plants, bins, benches and pigeon prevention measures will be installed along Central Walk. To allow the pigeon proofing to take place, Central Walk will be partially closed on Sunday 6 and 13 September as there will be heavy machinery on site.

The final flourish that will bring warmth and personality to the town centre gateway is the three murals. Painting is due to start towards the end of September, with three separate artists creating incredible artworks along the space, each depicting parts of Hucknall’s heritage and history. Full details of these, along with the designs, will be released in the coming weeks once everything is confirmed.

Since improvements started in April, the dated canopy - which was impossible to clean, maintain or repair and was an attractive pigeon nesting place – has been removed and the paving has been replaced with a modern lighter block.

The £600k funding, partially from the Council’s share of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, also covers the planned Chapel Street renovations, however they are currently on pause whilst the Council works through the final details with partners.

Both sets of improvements aim to improve feelings of safety for shoppers, visitors and businesses, whilst encouraging higher footfall and bringing greenery to the high street.

“It is exciting to see the finish date for our improvements to this key pedestrian link between the town centre and Piggins Croft. The work completed so far has already made a huge difference to the feel of the space and the finishing touches will really elevate it.

“Ultimately, we want to encourage higher footfall in Hucknall, by making people want to spend more time in the town centre and contributing towards feelings of safety. The murals will create real talking points and showcase Hucknall’s proud history and I can’t wait to see them in place”.
