Central Walk revamp now completed
Ashfield District Council’s improvements to modernise Central Walk, Hucknall, have now been completed.
The pedestrian walkway has now been transformed from dark and uninviting to bright, airy and welcoming. The full works included removing the date canopy, removing and replacing the paving with a lighter block to match the high street, and installing new pigeon prevention measures, CCTV, bespoke planters, benches and bins.
Following resident feedback, new secure cycle fixing points have now been installed on Central Walk.
The planting for the 28 flower troughs was designed and carried out by a specialist company with hardy, evergreen species well suited to the UK climate, with a focus on sustainability, biodiversity, visual appeal, and low maintenance requirements.
The finishing touch for Central Walk, is the mural which will be painted on the roof spaces of the Range. Painting is expected to start in the next couple of weeks.
The Council secured £600k, partially from their share of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, to fund the work to Central Walk and the improvements to Chapel Street. The works to Chapel Street have yet to start as the final details are still being worked through with partners.
Both sets of improvements aim to improve feelings of safety for shoppers, visitors and businesses, whilst encouraging higher footfall and bringing greenery to the high street.
Cllr Matthew Relf, Executive Lead Member for Growth, Regeneration and Local Planning said
“The revamp of Central Walk has made a huge difference to the feel of the walkway. This key pedestrian link between Piggins Croft and the town centre is a lot of people’s first impression of Hucknall, so it’s important that it is a modern and welcoming space.
“Ultimately, we want to encourage higher footfall in Hucknall town centre. These works will contribute towards feelings of safety, making people want to spend more time in the town centre.”
Cllr Lee Waters, Ward Member for Hucknall Central, said
“Central Walk is an important route into Hucknall town centre and I’m really pleased to see the improvements completed. It’s brighter, cleaner and more welcoming, and it’s great to see continued investment making a positive difference to our town centre for residents, visitors and local businesses.”
