Council marks White Ribbon Day 2025
This morning, Ashfield District Council, alongside partners, raised the White Ribbon flag to show support for White Ribbon Day 2025.
White Ribbon Day is a global movement that aims to raise awareness of, and end, male violence against women and girls.
Ashfield District Council has also been successful in extending their White Ribbon Accreditation until November 2028. The accreditation illustrates the Council’s commitment to ending violence against women and girls in Ashfield.
As part of the accreditation process, the Council has reviewed their internal procedures, provided training to staff, and created new Domestic Abuse Officer posts to ensure robust measures have been put in place to safeguard and support survivors of domestic abuse.
As part of their commitment to safeguarding and supporting survivors of domestic abuse, the Council has been awarded £30k for their sanctuary scheme. The sanctuary scheme allows survivors to stay in their home by introducing safety and security measures, without fear of the perpetrator returning. These include stronger doors, extra locks, security lights, a portable police alarm and installing a safe room.
Cllr John Wilmott, Lead Executive Member for Community Safety said:
“Ashfield District Council is so proud to support White Ribbon Day, it’s such an important campaign that can make a real difference to women and girls in Ashfield. Tackling domestic abuse and supporting survivors goes beyond just one day for us, that’s why we have created a new domestic abuse team, reviewed our internal policies and continue to work closely with domestic abuse charities and Nottinghamshire Police.
“The £30k funding will allow us to continue to support vulnerable residents when they need it the most. Tackling domestic abuse and supporting survivors is a key priority for the Council and this funding will help us achieve this”.
The White Ribbon UK Team, said:
“White Ribbon Accredited Organisations can make a real difference towards ending violence against women by promoting a culture of respect and equality among their staff and wider communities. By raising awareness among employees, people can learn how to become allies and call out violent and abusive behaviour when they see it. We are delighted to welcome Ashfield District Council as one of our White Ribbon Accredited Organisations and are looking forward to working with them towards ending violence against women once and for all”.
