Disused site transformed into community allotments in Stanton Hill

A vibrant community allotment is set to breathe new life into a disused area of Stanton Hill.

Ashfield District Council, working with local housing provider emh, is transforming Brand Lane into a place that supports health, wellbeing and community cohesion as part of its Stanton Hill 10-Year Investment Plan

The allotment will be used as a shared green space for residents, community groups and schools where they can grow fruit and vegetables and learn new skills.

It will include three zones – one for vegetables and flowers, an orchard for fruit trees and a grassed area for picnics and children to play.

The day-to-day management of the site will be the responsibility of the Teversal, Stanton Hill and Skegby Neighbourhood Forum.

The food grown at the allotment will be shared with the local community, with the hope of also being used for cooking sessions in the future.

Emh is now in the process of clearing the site and UKSPF funds, awarded through the Mayor of the East Midlands, will be used to fence off the allotment to keep it secure.

Cllr Helen-Ann Smith, who represents Stanton Hill on Ashfield District Council, said:

“This part of Stanton Hill has become a magnet for antisocial behaviour and fly-tipping and we want to be put an end to this.
“This allotment will benefit the whole community and create a vibrant space that we can all be proud of.
“I look forward to seeing the completed project and what the allotments will bring to everyone in Stanton Hill now and in the future.”

Charley Gibbons, Group Chief Executive at emh said:

“We’re delighted to be supporting the transformation of this disused site into a valued green space that supports the wellbeing of the local community. We look forward to working with our partners and seeing the space develop over the coming weeks.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said:

“The UKSPF has been an important funding stream for local investment, designed to stimulate local growth and improve living standards.
“This project at Stanton Hill is a great example of how we’re using that investment to make a difference to people’s lives. By turning an underused space into a shared community asset, we’re improving local wellbeing, strengthening communities and giving residents new opportunities.
“This is exactly the kind of locally led improvement we want to see across our region as we work to make the East Midlands a place people are proud to call home.”
