Five new PlayZones a step closer in Ashfield
‘Premier League’ sports facilities for five Ashfield communities are a step closer.
Ashfield District Council’s Full Council has green lighted changes to the new PlayZones across the District as work is due to be completed in 2027.
The Council will be working in partnership with the Football Foundation to deliver the £1.5 million programme.
PlayZones are new or refurbished outdoor mini pitches, designed for football and other sports, aimed at tackling inequalities in physical activity and access to facilities. The main priority groups the Football Foundation want to work with include women and girls, people living with a long-term health condition or disability and ethnically diverse communities.
Now Councillors have agreed to change the location of the PlayZone on Stamper Ground Rec in Skegby and to enter into a partnership agreement with Selston High School to allow residents to use the facilities in the evenings and at weekends.
The five sites are:
· Cowpasture Rec, Leamington (refurbishing the existing facilities)
· Stamper Rec, Skegby (new facility)
· Morven Park, Kirkby (new facility)
· Selston High School (refurbishing the existing facilities)
· Titchfield Park, Hucknall (refurbishing the existing facilities)
The Football Foundation provides 75% of the build costs and provides technical expertise throughout the process. PlayZones are a floodlit multi use games area with built in goalposts, hoops and/or nets and surfaced with tarmac or a synthetic surface.
Cllr Chris Huskinson, Executive Lead for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, said:
“This is an exciting project providing top class sporting facilities to residents across Ashfield and I can’t wait to see the PlayZones completed.
“This is part of the Council’s commitment to making Ashfield a happy and healthy place to live and work.”
Work is planned to start on the PlayZones in Autumn 2026 and completed in 2027.
