From first steps to skilled roles: Celebrating National Apprenticeship week
Ashfield District Council is proud to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week by shining a spotlight on 3 colleagues who began their careers as apprentices and have since progressed into skilled, permanent roles within the organisation.
Curtis, Callum and Joe each joined the Council as apprentices and have gone on to build successful careers within the Housing and Assets teams. Their journeys highlight the value of apprenticeships in developing talent, supporting local people into work, and strengthening our workforce for the future.
Curtis started his career as an Electrical Apprentice, gaining hands on experience while working towards his qualifications. Through hard work and continued development, he has progressed from a qualified electrician into the role of Housing Surveyor, where he now plays a key part in ensuring the safety and quality of homes across the district.
Joe joined the Council as a Plumbing Apprentice, learning essential trade skills and contributing to the maintenance of council properties. He later became a Heating Engineer, and his dedication and commitment have seen him progress further into the role of Housing Surveyor, supporting residents and helping to maintain high standards across our housing stock.
Callum began his journey as an Electrical Apprentice, building strong technical knowledge and practical experience. He has since progressed from a qualified electrician into the Assets Team, where he now works as a Compliance Liaison Officer, helping to ensure our properties meet important safety and compliance standards.
Their stories demonstrate the opportunities available through apprenticeships at Ashfield District Council, from gaining qualifications and practical experience to building long‑term careers that make a real difference in the community.
Councillor Andy Meakin, Executive Lead Member for Social Housing and Assets, said:
“We are incredibly proud of Curtis, Callum and Joe. Their achievements highlight the real value of apprenticeships in building skills, confidence and long term careers.
By investing in apprenticeships, we’re investing in Ashfield’s future workforce, and their success is a fantastic example of the progression and opportunities available here at the Council.”
We remain committed to supporting apprentices across a wide range of services and encouraging more local people to consider apprenticeship pathways.
