Green light for 20 new homes on former care home site
Plans for 20 new Council homes on a brownfields site in Kirkby have been given the go-ahead.
Ashfield District Council’s Planning Committee unanimously agreed to the homes in Fairhaven, providing houses to residents currently on its housing register.
This is the site of the former Kirklands Residential Care Home and Day Centre, which closed in 2016. The building was demolished in 2020 after falling into a state of disrepair and has been left derelict since.
The application proposes 100% affordable properties which will be a mixture of two and three bedroom homes, two-bed bungalows and one and two bed flats.
Access to the properties will be via Fairhaven and Central Avenue, leading to Kingsway.
Cllr Andy Meakin, the Council’s Executive Lead Member for Social Housing and Assets, said:
“This site has become an eyesore since the closure of the care home 10 years ago, attracting antisocial behaviour. This application will see 20 families have a place to call home and will be built to the highest quality.
“They will be energy efficient houses and close to our previous development in Adrian Sheldon View. This is part of the Council’s commitment to providing safe and affordable housing to the people of Ashfield.”
The new homes are part of Ashfield District Council’s pledge in 2023 to build more than 200 new homes within four years. This was on top of the 100 built since 2018.
This includes 16 new homes just around the corner in Adrian Sheldon View, Kirkby, and work is nearing completion on 40 properties in Hardwick Lane, Sutton.
Other developments have included disabled adapted bungalows, family homes, and flats on various garage sites in Hucknall and Kirkby, as well as utilising a former under-used car park and other sites for homes in Sutton.
