  • Improvements on the way for Albert Street Recreation Ground

Improvements on the way for Albert Street Recreation Ground

Ashfield District Council is seeking views on plans to relocate existing play equipment and introduce new equipment at Albert Street Recreation Ground, Hucknall.

To allow for the expansion of the car park at Hucknall Leisure Centre, the existing children’s play area, Albert Street Recreation Ground, will be moved to the grassed area next to the leisure centre.

This provides an opportunity for the Council to replace some of the equipment that has reached end of life and introduce state-of-the-art play equipment. Current play equipment that still has years left in it will be relocated amongst the new equipment. Residents are encouraged to take part in the consultation to ensure their favoured play options are included in the new park.

The Council are hosting an in-person consultation event at Hucknall Leisure Centre on Wednesday 17 December between 3pm and 6pm. The plans and the consultation can be found on the Council’s website until Wednesday 24 December.

473,105 visitors using Hucknall Leisure Centre between Jan 25 and Oct 25, the car park expansion is a necessity.

The proposal would see the car parking spaces increasing from 137 standard bays to 199 larger standard bays, including the creation of 8 parent and child spots, an additional 3 spaces for disabled parking, and 7 electric vehicle charging bays.

The existing 7 lampposts would be removed and replaced with 21 LED streetlights to ensure the car park and footpaths are properly lit, creating a safer environment. New trees and shrubs are also planned as part of the improvements.

Cllr Chris Huskinson, Executive Lead Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing said

“It is a shame that we will lose a small piece of green space, however it’s such a brilliant opportunity for us to replace old play equipment. Residents now have the chance to shape how they would like Albert Street Rec to look for their families and children. We will be planting more trees and shrubs across the site and a large portion of the green space next to the leisure centre will be left wild for nature.
“This expansion is a sign of how popular Hucknall Leisure Centre is. We have invested hundreds of thousands, building a teaching pool, new reception, café, studios, and sports hall to ensure Hucknall residents have a fantastic leisure facility. We have listened to resident and visitor complaints regarding anti-social behaviour in the car park and this new lighting and CCTV scheme will help tackle this”.
