New oaks replace ash at Brierley Forest Park

Ashfield District Council is proud to announce the planting of new oak trees in Brierley Forest Park, donated by the Sutton in Ashfield Inner Wheel Club to mark their 80th anniversary.

The oak whips have been planted to replace ash trees that were removed due to ash dieback, a devastating disease that has affected woodlands across the UK. By choosing oak, a species renowned for its strength and longevity, the project ensures that the park’s landscape will continue to flourish for generations to come.

This initiative is a fitting way to celebrate the Inner Wheel Club’s 80 years of service to the local community. The Club has a long tradition of supporting charitable causes and community projects, and the donation of these trees reflects their commitment to leaving a lasting legacy in Sutton in Ashfield.

Councillor Helen-Ann Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Parks and Environmental Services, said:

"We are delighted to work alongside the Sutton in Ashfield Inner Wheel Club on this project. Their generous donation of oak trees not only commemorates an important milestone but also strengthens our efforts to protect and enhance Ashfield’s green spaces.
"Planting resilient species like oak is vital to our Tree and Woodland Strategy, which sets out a long-term vision for tackling climate change, increasing biodiversity, and creating healthier environments for residents."

The Council’s Tree and Woodland Strategy highlights the importance of replacing trees lost to disease with species that can withstand future challenges. Oak trees are particularly valuable for biodiversity, supporting hundreds of species of insects, birds, and mammals. Their presence in Brierley Forest Park will enrich the habitat, provide shade and shelter, and contribute to the park’s role as a much-loved space for recreation and wellbeing.

Members of the Sutton in Ashfield Inner Wheel Club attended the planting, celebrating both their anniversary and the shared commitment to preserving Ashfield’s natural heritage. The event was a reminder of how community groups and local government can work together to create positive, lasting change.

The new oak trees will stand as a symbol of resilience, continuity, and community spirit ensuring that Brierley Forest Park remains a thriving green space for residents and visitors to enjoy well into the future.
