Preparing Ashfield for a greener spring
Ashfield District Council is welcoming Earth Month with a renewed focus on caring for the district’s parks, green spaces, and natural environment. As spring begins, teams across the Council are carrying out essential seasonal work to ensure our shared spaces are healthy, vibrant, and ready for residents to enjoy.
The first round of hedge and grass cutting is now underway across parks, open spaces, and community areas. These early cuts help keep pathways clear, improve visibility and safety, and support healthy growth throughout the warmer months.
Ashfield District Council manages a significant natural estate, including more than 30,000 trees and hundreds of acres of parks and open spaces. This work forms a key part of protecting local biodiversity and maintaining the district’s much‑loved green areas.
Spring planting has also begun, with pollinator‑friendly flowers and native species being introduced across the district. From colourful displays in town centres to the continued expansion of the wildflower meadow at Sutton Lawn, this year’s planting scheme focuses on: Native species that thrive locally and support wildlife, bright, seasonal displays that enhance the local area.
Trees remain central to Ashfield’s environmental identity, playing a vital role in improving air quality, supporting wildlife, and enhancing wellbeing. As part of the Council’s long‑term Tree and Woodland Strategy, for every tree removed due to disease or safety concerns, two new trees are planted, with additional tree planting scheduled to take place throughout the district in the coming months.
Cllr Helen Ann Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Parks and Environmental Services, said: “Earth Month is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the work we do all year round to protect and enhance Ashfield’s natural environment.
Our teams take enormous pride in preparing the district for spring, from planting thousands of flowers to caring for the trees and green spaces that make our communities such wonderful places to live. We’re committed to creating a cleaner, greener Ashfield for residents now and for future generations.”
These seasonal preparations form part of Ashfield District Council’s ongoing commitment to nurturing a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment for all.
