Progress builds as steel framework erected at Northern Depot

The rebuild of Ashfield District Council’s Northern Depot has taken a significant step forward with the erection of the steel framework.

This visible progress marks a significant step towards delivering a modern, purpose-built facility that will transform the way essential services are delivered to residents across the district.

Once complete, the new Depot, on Station Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield will serve as the hub for frontline services including waste collection, street cleaning, grounds maintenance, and fleet management. With the steel structure now standing tall, the project is moving steadily towards completion and demonstrates the Council’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that directly benefits the community.

Constructed by Lindum, the rebuild includes:

  • Demolition of the existing ‘Neighbourhoods’ building to create a new car park and secure vehicle area
  • Refurbishment of the existing administration building
  • Installation of a 3m high acoustic fence near the railway to reduce noise for nearby homes

Lindum Contracts Manager Darrel Patten said: “We’re making excellent progress in bringing the modern vision for the Northern Depot to life. The installation of the steel frame for the new depot building marks a significant milestone in our delivery of this project.

We have meticulously planned the construction phases to ensure zero interruption to essential council services. The new depot will be a significant upgrade, not just for the council teams, but for the whole community.”

Benefits for Residents

  • Reliable Waste Collections – Modern facilities will reduce vehicle downtime, ensuring consistent and dependable services.
  • Enhanced Green Spaces – Improved equipment storage and workshops will support the upkeep of parks and play areas.
  • Efficient Fleet Operations – Purpose-built facilities will streamline vehicle management, improving service delivery.
  • Safer Working Environment – A modern, sustainable base will help staff deliver services more effectively.
  • Sustainability First – Energy-efficient design will reduce the Council’s carbon footprint and support long-term resilience.

Councillor Helen-Ann Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Parks and Environmental Services, said:

“The erection of the steel framework is a sure sign of the progress we’re making. This investment is first and foremost about our residents, delivering cleaner streets, reliable collections, and well‑maintained green spaces for years to come.
"We are not just building a new depot; we are creating a modern facility that will stand the test of time, support our frontline teams and ensure the very best services for our community.”

In addition, the Northern Depot will host Vision West Nottinghamshire College, providing training opportunities in vehicle maintenance and civil engineering. This partnership will create a hands-on learning environment for apprentices and students, integrating education with live council operations to benefit both the workforce and the wider community.

The depot rebuild is part of Ashfield District Council’s wider commitment to modernising infrastructure and strengthening frontline services for the community. The project is on track for completion in Summer 2026.
