Raising of the Red Ensign in Ashfield for Merchant Navy Day

Merchant Navy Day has been marked in Ashfield with the raising of the Red Ensign flag and a commemorative service.

The event was held at Ashfield District Council's Urban Road headquarters with Chairman Cllr Paul Grafton and Chief Executive Theresa Hodgkinson joined by the Merchant Navy Association Mansfield and Ashfield Branch, members of the Armed Forces, elected members, civic guests, ex-forces veterans and colleagues.

Merchant Navy Day remembers and commemorates the service that the men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets have done over the years, both during conflict and peace.

Raising the flag provides awareness and support for the Merchant Navy Seafarers UK, past and present and all they have done for the country. This year marks 10 years of the raising of the flag.

We would like to thank the Merchant Navy Association Mansfield and Ashfield Branch, members of the Armed Forces and everyone who took the time to join us.
