Simpler Recycling introduced across Ashfield
Simpler Recycling comes into effect across Ashfield today, bringing clearer rules to help residents recycle the right materials with confidence.
Introduced as part of new national legislation, the changes mean that from 31 March residents will follow updated recycling guidelines that set out exactly what can be placed in their recycling bin.
The aim is to reduce confusion, improve recycling rates, and ensure the right materials are collected.
Households can now recycle a wider range of everyday items, including:
- Paper and card
- Newspapers, magazines, envelopes, cardboard boxes, packaging sleeves
- Plastic packaging
- Cartons
- Tetrapak
- Bottles, pots, tubs, trays
- Metal packaging
- Tins, cans, foil, empty aerosols
All items should be clean, dry and loose to help prevent contamination.
Ashfield District Council has updated its website and communications channels with clear guidance to help residents understand the changes. This includes simple instructions on how to prepare recycling correctly and what to do with items that cannot be recycled.
Councillor Helen-Ann Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Parks and Environmental Services said:
“Simpler Recycling comes into effect today, and we want to make sure residents feel confident about what goes in their recycling bin.
The new system from central government is designed to be clearer and more consistent, and we’ll continue to provide straightforward guidance to support households as they get used to the changes.”
Residents are encouraged to check the Council’s website for full details of the new recycling rules, including information on items that should go in the general waste bin or be taken to a local recycling point.
Food waste collections will not be in place by 31 March 2026, and paper and card will remain part of the dry mixed recycling service and will not be collected separately. Kerbside glass will also continue to be collected separately.
