Massage and special treatment

If you provide massages or special treatments you will need a licence and show you meet hygiene and health and safety standards.

This is covered under the Nottinghamshire County Council Act 1985.

As well as the premises needing to be licensed, the person carrying out the treatments also needs to be licensed.

We will carry out checks to make sure they are qualified, and for any previous criminal convictions. Anyone working in massage and special treatments without the right licences may be fined up to £2500.

Tanning salons and saunas need a different licence.

How to apply for a massage and special treatment licence

You will need to download the application form from the related documents section, complete it, and return it along with any supporting documentation and your payment.

You will also need to send:

  • photographs of all practitioners (signed and dated) that carry out the licensable activities
  • original certificates for all practitioners that are carrying out the licensable activities.

As part of our consideration of your application we'll send a copy to Nottinghamshire Police. We'll also come and inspect the premises.

After 40 working days you can assume tacit consent applies - provided we have your completed application, all required supporting documentation, your fee, police checks have been carried out and premises have been inspected.

Renew a massage and special treatments business licence

You will need to send your renewal with plenty of time before your current licence runs out. If you do this you can keep trading with tacit consent and we'll carry out police checks and a premises visit later.

To renew you will need to download the form from the related documents section of this web page, complete and return it.

Transfer or change a massage and special treatments business licence

If you want to transfer your business licence to a new operator or make other changes you can do this through the form. If you want to transfer an individual licence please get in touch.

To transfer or change you will need to download the form from the related documents section of this web page, complete and return it.

How much does the licence cost?

The massage and special treatment licence costs £200. It costs the same for a new licence or to renew. You can pay for the licence online using a debit or credit card.
