Zoos are required to be licenced under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981

It is recommended that you read the full provisions of this Act before registering. Copies of the Act can be obtained from The Office of Public Sector Information. Alternatively, a copy of the Act can be viewed at all Council offices. If you require further assistance to understand the requirements of the Act please contact us.

A 'Zoo' is defined as an establishment where wild animals are kept for exhibition to the public otherwise than for purposes of a circus or in a pet shop. The Act applies to any zoo to which members of the public have access, with or without charge for admission, on more than seven days in a period of 12 consecutive months.

To apply for a Zoo Licence you should contact us to discuss your requirements. There will be a fee attached to this application.

Will Tacit Consent Apply?

No. It is in the public interest and the animals welfare that the authority must process your application before it can be granted.
