Ashfield District Council celebrates Commonwealth Day

Thursday 16 March 2017 Ashfield District Council celebrates Commonwealth Day


The Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Cllr David Griffiths was joined by Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Liell Frankilin and year five pupils from Orchard Primary, Kirkby in Ashfield to raise the Commonwealth flag outside the Council offices on Urban Road.



Commonwealth day is held on the second Monday in March each year and is an opportunity for individuals, communities and organisations to promote the values of peace, democracy and equality that the Commonwealth stands for.

Said Cllr David Griffiths, Chairman of Ashfield District Council “The Commonwealth aims to create strong links between rich and poor countries bringing together lots of different religious faiths and cultures with a common goal of promoting democracy and human rights.

"It is wonderful to see all the girls and boys taking part in this celebration and thinking about different cultures and communities all over the world.”
