Monday 15 October 2018 Greenwood Community Awards Recognises Ashfield Volunteers

Ashfield District Council Environmental and Walking for Health Volunteers were recently recognised at the 15th Annual Greenwood Community Awards which took place on Thursday 4th October 2018.

Cllr Philip Rostance, Champion of the Greenwood Community Forest and representing Nottinghamshire County Council, presented the awards to community groups and individual volunteers, for outstanding contribution towards improving the environment.

Nominations were received from groups and organisations for their valuable work carried out over the last year working towards the creation and use of the Greenwood Community Forest.

Following a barbecue, one hundred and forty five guests enjoyed a review of achievements by volunteers and organisations during 2017 presented by Margret Vince, Chair of the Friends of Greenwood Community Forum.

Fourteen awards were presented on the night to volunteers from all areas of Greenwood and included awards for individuals and teams of all ages and abilities who take part in conservation tasks or work behind the scenes.

Keith Wallace, the founder member of On Your Doorstep Health Walks, is extremely passionate about walking and spends many hours each week voluntarily planning, delivering and leading the groups’ many walks across Ashfield and Mansfield. He is also instrumental in organising a wide range of social events and activities for members including coach trips, a sports day, darts nights and skittles.

A highlight of the evening was an outstanding contribution Award for Pam Hallam, Friends of Kings Mill Reservoir, who has also been a member of the Friends of Greenwood Community Forum for eighteen years. Colin Barson, Friends of Greenwood Community Forum, praised Pam’s diligence, trustworthiness and reliability whilst carrying out the role of treasurer.

Margret Vince, praised the award winners and said: “During my first year as Chair I have had the privilege of meeting some passionate and knowledgeable volunteers who care deeply about their green space, and that is why it is a great pleasure to host tonight’s event to recognise those amongst us who you say deserve a pat on the back.”
