Lammas 10-year anniversary celebrated in the ‘best possible way’

Wednesday 7 November 2018 Lammas 10-year anniversary celebrated in the ‘best possible way’

Three top athletes hailed an ‘amazing’ day as Sutton-in-Ashfield’s flagship leisure centre celebrated its tenth anniversary with an action-packed community day over the weekend.

Former Olympic sprinter and hurdler Colin Jackson, CBE, local Paralympic champion Ollie Hynd, MBE, and former British national figure skating champion, David Richardson, headlined the event at Lammas Leisure Centre, which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Ashfield District Council.

The Council Leader, Jason Zadrozny, was also in attendance, just as he was 10 years ago, as the multi-purpose facility celebrated its impact in the local community over that period with a day full of diversity.

Colin Jackson said the 10-year anniversary was marked in the ‘best possible way’.

The former two-time World Champion said: “Lammas Leisure Centre is an incredible site. The people that attended were full of energy and enjoyed what was on. They celebrated the 10-year anniversary in the best possible way by going to the Centre, taking part in the free activities and, importantly, enjoying it. With centres like these, it isn’t just about the working out and getting fit, it is the social element as well. We’re in the heart of the community, so when you’re celebrating an anniversary, as Lammas has, and the community join in, it is a win-win.”

Pupils from Forest Glade Primary School delivered three moving renditions to a packed foyer, before the three athletes held a Q&A, autograph and signing session, before each drew a raffle prize – held to raise money for Bobby’s Fund.

Leader of Ashfield District Council, Jason Zadrozny said: “I am delighted to be stood here once again ten years after opening Lammas Leisure Centre in 2008. In the past decade over 6.5 million people have been through the doors here and that is testament to the excellence of this facility and the people who work here.

“We are also looking forward to developing our leisure provision in Ashfield with the introduction of a new centre featuring a swimming pool in Kirkby. State-of-the-art facilities such as this one can only be beneficial to all our residents in maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.”
