Sutton Lawn has welcomed a brand new junior parkrun for local children.
The opening event, held on Sunday 2nd February, saw 80 children aged between 4 and 14 year old brave the elements to complete the four lap course.
parkrun organise free, weekly, timed events around the world. The events are open to everyone, are free and are safe and easy to take part in. Sutton Lawn junior parkrun is a 2k event for juniors, hosted every Sunday at 9am. The children can walk, jog or run the course alongside their parents/carers. The event is delivered entirely by a team of volunteers.
The event has been made possible due to financial contributions from Ashfield District Council, Active Notts, Mansfield Building Society and Councillor Samantha Deakin’s Nottinghamshire County Council Divisional Fund.
Ashfield District Council Chairman Councillor Anthony Brewer officially started Sunday’s opening event. He said: “It’s fabulous to see so many youngsters already taking part in the event. We all know how good running is for you and the children looked like they were having a great time, despite the rain!”
Event Directors Paul Davies and Jode Binch, with the support of local parkrun ambassador Mark Hazlehurst, have been instrumental in the launch of the new junior parkrun. Paul and Jode were delighted with the success of the opening event.
Paul said: “It is fantastic that local families can benefit from this free, weekly event in one of Ashfield’s most attractive public spaces. Sutton Lawn junior parkrun will support the physical and emotional wellbeing of our local community. It was amazing to see so many families and local volunteers enjoying the opening event, there were smiles all around.”
Jode said: “I’m so proud to be part of our new local junior parkrun. Getting children up, out and active is such a hard task in times of technology so being able to provide a fun, free, family event in the area is amazing! Thank you to all of those involved in bringing a junior parkrun to Sutton Lawn and to our volunteers who make sure the event can go ahead each week. Handing out high fives and seeing the look on the faces of the children as they complete the course is the best way to start a Sunday.”
Councillor Samantha Deakin, Ward Councillor for Sutton Central & New Cross, said: “As the local councillor for the area it’s great to see events happening for young people. My hat goes off to the tremendous efforts of all the volunteers involved so I’m pleased that the Council has been able to support this event.”
A junior parkrun is also available at Hucknall’s Titchfield Park every Sunday at 9am. Brierley Forest parkrun (5k event) is held at Brierley Forest Park every Saturday at 9am.
