Even more new Council homes coming to Ashfield
At yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, Ashfield District Council approved plans to transfer Council-owned land on Central Avenue, Kirkby, to allow new Council homes to be built on the site.
The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities recently granted permission for the Council to change the use of the overgrown scrubland on Central Avenue, in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. This allows the Council to go ahead with their plans to use the site for Council housing.
The site is located next to the allotments in Kirkby, but no allotments would be lost as part of the plans. The derelict former garages and wasteland will be transformed from a grot spot to brand new family homes.
The land on Central Avenue will contribute to the Council’s aim to build 200 more Council homes over the next four years, on top of the 108 new builds completed since 2018.
Cllr Tom Hollis, Executive Lead Member for Strategic Housing and Climate Change, said:
“Reducing waiting list times for our Council homes is a priority for us and to do that we need to build more good quality, truly affordable homes. Central Avenue is a perfect example of a prime piece of land that should be transformed from wasteland to quality housing.
“Ashfield District Council has already built an impressive 108 new homes across the District, and we are committed to building more to provide excellent housing for our local residents. We will continue to look for more suitable brownfield land for even more homes.”
The site in Kirkby will be named after local serviceman, Adrian Sheldon who tragically lost his life while fighting for our country. A fitting tribute to one of Ashfield’s heroes.
Over the past four years the Council has built a range of homes including disabled adapted bungalows, family homes, and flats on various garage sites in Hucknall and Kirkby, as well as utilising a former under-used car parks and other sites for homes in Sutton. The Council’s largest development is currently underway on Warwick Close in Kirkby which will welcome a mixture of 34 homes early next year.
