Felley Priory viewed from across formal lawns

Felley Priory Gardens

Felley Priory Gardens, nursery and tea room are on the A608 toward Heanor, close to J27 of the M1.

Felley Priory was founded in 1156 but the exterior of the building is primarily Tudor architecture. The gardens contain a selection of rare and interesting plants and feature a rose garden, pergolas, herbaceous borders, a medieval garden, knot gardens and an orchard.

All plants and shrubs sold from the nursery are grown in the garden and there is also a tea room.

The priory provided the settings for D. H. Lawrence’s White Peacock and Sons and Lovers. His birthplace, Eastwood, is 3 miles away, where the D. H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum provides a fascinating insight into his early life, where visitors can learn about family life in the mining community, which shaped Lawrence’s formative years.

There is much more information about the Gardens and the history of the priory on their website.
