Sutton Town Centre Anti-Social Behaviour Update
Ashfield District Council’s Community Safety Team have been clamping down on offenders in Sutton town centre following reports of anti-social behaviour.
Over the past couple of weeks, the team have issued:
Seven Community Protection Warnings to people committing anti-social behaviour and street drinkers. This means that they must not be in possession of open bottles of alcohol in the town centre.
Four Community Protection Notices to repeat offenders. A Community Protection Notice is a formal notice and can result in a criminal conviction if the person fails to comply to the notice.
Eight Direction to Move on Notices which require the offending residents to move out of the area for 48 hours.
One Fixed Penalty Notice for failure to comply with the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for failing to surrender alcohol.
Six Tenancy Warnings to Ashfield District Council tenants who have breached their tenancy agreement because of the issues they caused in the town centre.
The Community Safety Team have also secured one prosecution for multiple breaches of a Community Protection Notice, and one Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). A CBO is available on conviction for any criminal offence in any criminal court and includes prohibitions to stop the anti-social behaviour.
They have also secured one pending injunction to exclude a resident from the town centre and three pending prosecutions for failing to surrender alcohol / breaches of PSPO.
These positive actions follow the installation of a CCTV camera on Welbeck Street to help tackle the anti-social behaviour there.
Cllr Samantha Deakin, Councillor for Sutton Central and New Cross said, ‘As these results demonstrate, we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour in Ashfield. Sutton town centre has been an area of concern for residents and businesses and the Council is committed to eliminating the causes of these problems. We will not hesitate to use enforcement action against any individual who commits any type of anti-social behaviour.
“I want to make it clear that Sutton town centre will be remaining an area of priority for Ashfield District Council. We are committed to making our town centres safe places to visit and enjoy, and anyone who disrupts this will be dealt with.”
