A New leisure Centre In Kirkby

Ashfield District Council wants local people to have access to modern leisure facilities to help them lead healthier lifestyles, realise their sporting ambitions, or simply have fun keeping fit.

The Council has recently decided to go ahead with an ambitious plan to build a new leisure centre in Kirkby to replace the existing ageing facilities at the Festival Hall which are no longer meeting the needs of the community and are not cost effective to manage.

Further work will now take place about on the development of the design working with possible investment partners such as Sport England to help maximise the benefits for Ashfield in providing a state-of-the art combined wet and dry facility, and ongoing work with Ashfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership to improve community access and programming to help improve the overall health and wellbeing of the area now and in the future.

So far previous studies and consultations have established that combined facilities could be successfully developed on the land adjacent to the Festival  Hall site and the initial proposals have been drawn up which include a swimming pool, gym, studio spaces, café, wellbeing suite including sauna, adventure play and meeting spaces.

Currently the Festival Hall site is home to a gym, sports hall and exercise studio and it is envisaged that the existing centre will remain open until the new centre is completed.

What is being proposed

The proposal looks at building a new, high quality indoor wet and dry leisure facility including a 25m 4 lane swimming pool with additional leisure water, sports hall with cinema, adventure play and climbing, fitness gym, exercise studios, and café. The new centre will replace the Festival Hall for people who live, work or visit Kirkby and surrounding areas. The new facility could also attract new investment and increased visits to the town, with increased activity for existing businesses, placing it at the heart of Kirkby’s future prosperity.
